Fast and Easy Home Page

Within a few seconds of a visitor requesting your website, it should be obvious as to who you are and what you can do for them. Animations, fancy graphics, innovative navigation and music background may make a site look pretty, but if they are not informing your customer of your product or services, they are just unnecessary distractions that increase load time.
Remember, your web site is there to provide your visitors with valuable information and to capture their information so that you can have them in your database. Anything else is redundant. keep it simple. Some sample sites.

Frankies OFC homePage BellaLuna chinese Pizza NovaPompei

Your Home Page should include

Business name, address and phone- in text.
Be sure to include your full business name, address, phone, fax and email address. Include state, zip and area-code. This should be clearly visible and in text format. You can have it in an image file as well, but be sure it is in text format for the search engines to find.
Identifying image or logo.
A familiar image or logo that your customers can recognize as you, this should be consistent with other materials such as signage and or a printed menu. If you are part of a chain or franchise, be consistent with all locations and with other affiliated websites
Easy / intuitive navigation to other pages.
All hyperlinks should be clear to your visitors. Graphic images, such as buttons or tabs, should be clearly labeled and easy to read. Select the colors, backgrounds, textures, and special effects on your web graphics very carefully. It is more important that your navigational buttons and tabs be easy to read and understand than to have "flashy" effects.
Your visitors should be able to find what they are looking for in your site within three clicks. If not, they are very likely to click off your site as quickly as they clicked on.
Brief description of services.
Include a brief description of the services you offer and post meaningful information often in your site so that people keep on coming back to check it out. For example, you can announce special events that you are hosting such as charity dinners, wine dinners, new menu items, etc. - highlight order online if available.
Geographic area being serviced/delivery restrictions
Be sure to include the geographic area you service. If you offer shipping or delivery, be as specific as possible or offer a link to a more detailed explanation.
Link to mapping program i.e.-Mapquest or Google-maps
In addition to your name and address in text format, a simple link to a mapping program like Map Quest or Goggle Maps is free and it provides your visitors with detailed description of where you are located along with driving directions.
Hours of operation
Post your business hours on the home page, it is one of the top 3 reasons someone is visiting your website. Keep them up to date and announce closings for upcoming holidays, if you offer online ordering the hours for service and delivery should be consistent with the ordering system.
Mailing list signup link
Offer a place for your customers to join your mailing list, this is a valuable marketing tool as it invites you to send them promotional material. Keep it simple, all you need is their name and email address to, don"t have them fill out forms. Have the website send a test email to ensure it was entered correctly.
Bookmark link
Let your customer save you as their favorite. People are a lot more likely to return to your site if it"s in their bookmark list. If you offer them a link to click that will add your site, they won"t forget. AddMe offers a link that will add the current URL to their browsers favorites or any of the popular social media sites.
Current specials or coupons
If you offer daily specials post today"s special on the home page, this gives reason for people to return to your site. While it is best to have coupons on a separate page that is easily accessed, you could put a few coupons on the home page especially if you offer online ordering and the coupons are in effect on certain days.

Superior Menu or list of services

A restaurant menu represents more than the food a restaurant serves. It evokes the atmosphere and theme of the setting. A playful menu suggests a more relaxed dining experience, and a very elegant menu indicates a more reserved meal. Combine your design elements and the meals you offer to create a menu that conveys your restaurant's personality. If you're not comfortable creating your own restaurant menu, have us design it for you, but make sure that you, or someone in your organization knows how to and is able to update your site. You can then take advantage of all the the existing features and be in a position to make additions and changes and stay up to date with new features.

Ingredients of effective online menus

Consistent colors backgrounds and fonts

Your menu font and color scheme should reflect your restaurant theme. Use graphics for the fonts you need in category titles using a type style consistent with your printed material and the image you want to project. The graphics can be generated using software. For the rest of your menu select a web browser friendly font, as the the fonts must be present on your visitors computer and image files take up too much overhead. Add borders and images as you like, but remember to keep it simple and light.

Start with list of sections

Whether or not you show the entire menu when presenting your menu page, start with your list of services that has a link to that section so your visitor need not scroll through unnecessary information. Add a return link after each section. Arrange sequentially: i.e. appetizers, soups & salad, main entrees, desserts and beverages.

Images

Show images of items that reflect the categorey being presented and maybe a few selected items. An image can say a thousand words. The image sells the meal in a way words never could, but avoid adding to many pictures or busy backgrounds, that make the menu hard to read and increases page load time. Choose the items you want to highlight and that compliment the category.

Item images

Show images of items on mouse-over of all entrees and key dishes. Whenever possible include an image. It is true that pictures sell food. If you don"t have a good in house image of an item you are offering, find a stock photo that closely represents your offering. Seeing the item stimulates the appetite.

Columnize your menu

Depending on the number of items in the category, one or two columns makes for an attractive layout. Adding more columns runs the risk of looking more like the newspaper classifieds. Also, depending on your restaurant"s image: One column inflects more of a sense of sophistication and elegance where two columns may bring forth more a sense of playfulness.

Item Description

The selections title should make a guest"s mouth water.Use ethnic names if they fit to add a bit of flair. For example, Chicken Margarita sounds better than Chicken topped with spicy tomatoes. Explain what is in the dish in the description itself. If the description is large, use a link to a more detailed description of the dish.Keep detailed information that doesn't describe what th item is, such as nutritional information off the
main menu pages, put it in a link or title. Use hi-lights to identify items that customers may be looking for such as

  1. New
  2. Spicy
  3. Organic
  4. Healthy
  5. Vegetarian

Feedback form

How am I doing? The best way to find out what is working and what is not working for your business and for your website is to ask your users. Have an area where your users can freely tell you their thoughts and ideas. make the area highly visible, making it obvious you are genuinely interested in honest feedback. Use a form that is simple to fill out and readily available. This is also an excellent opportunity to collect the email address and add the customer to your marketing database.

Coupons - maybe

If you use coupons in your ads, rather than including an image of it in your printed advertisement, make the coupons available on a page in your website and advertise the link to these coupons. This gives your customer the opportunity to visit your website and see the other valuable offerings you have. Make the coupon down-loadable rather than just print screen, you can then collect the customers email address for your marketing. If you offer online ordering, give the customer the opportunity to redeem the coupon right away.

OnLine Coupons

If you have coupons to promote business on particular days, put them on your  home page the day they are effective. If you have online ordering be sure the coupons can be honored by the ordering system.

eMail Coupons

A good way to collect email addresses and promote return visits is by offering coupons online. Include an opt-in option on the coupon that will allow you to send emails to that customer for later promotions.

eMail Marketing

Email marketing is one of the most effective communication and promotion vehicles in the Internet. 90% of Internet users and 56% of all Americans use email on a regular basis (source: e-marketeer Aug. 2006). Restaurants can benefit from email marketing because it’s fast, direct, cost-effective, and builds loyal relationships with your clients. You may not be ready to use this inexpensive marketing plan right away, but your website should have in place the tools to collect the information, and you can start building a database with email address.

mailing list signup

Have a link on the home page where visitors can add themseld to your mailing list.

collect email addresses with online ordering

Offer Online ordering from your website it gives you the opportunity to collect more email addresses. Always include an opt-in to your mailing list link on every order.

collect email addresses with coupon sheets

Make available coupons on a page in your website and point in your advertising to a link to these coupons. Make the coupon down-loadable rather than just print screen, you can then collect the customers email address for your marketing.

Gallery of Images

To really express who you are and what you do, include a gallery of images and/or movies depicting you and your services. The focus should be on what you are trying to sell. If you want to emphasize your dining in, show pictures of your restaurant, if it is your food, concentrate on those beautiful dishes. Use smaller pictures on the page with links to larger images.

You can have a slide show on the home page, but don't overload it with more than 10 slides as these files will load even though the visitor will most likely leave the page well before viewing them all, better, to change the images often. This can be done through software.

Complete content management

You should be able to sign into a control panel and have complete access to your website. Make sure you have the ability to keep the site up to date and fresh with any new happenings or offerings and to keep your menu or list of services current to reflect the latest prices and promotions. Too many restaurants have their website reflecting out of date information and prices while their printed material is current because it is either too difficult to change or they need the web designer to do it.

Things to look for in a content management System include:

Security

Make certain you have easy access to your administration area, but at the same time ensure it is secure and can be accessed only by yourself and individuals you authorize.

Home page

You should have complete access to all the information displayed on your home page. At a minimum, make sure you can edit the text, preferably in a WYS-I-WYG editor especially if your not very familiar with HTML. Other information  you may need or want access to may be part of a database system, particularly if it integrates with other components of your website or is shared across the internet, such as hours of operation, location information, specials, coupons, payments accepted, delivery/eat-in/shipping options.

Menu/list of services

Any good content management system will allow you to add and change categories  and menu items. The things to look for are how easy it is to use? does it have a text editor? How many price sizes?  how easy is it to upload images? are images re-sized? are stock images available? Do you have control over the style or do you need an expert in HTML and CSS to change the number of columns, the  fonts, colors, background images and borders? if you are offering online ordering, how easy is to add or change food modifiers and ordering options?

Specials
If you offer daily specials, and know what they are for each day of the week, you may want to have the ability to set up the specials that show up on the home page in advance, rather than needing to change your website daily.
Coupons
If you offer coupons, you would want your Content Management System to have the ability to add coupons on a separate page where they can be downloaded by the visitor, while collecting the email address, if you offer online ordering from your menu, you would want the coupon to interact with the ordering engine possibly converting that visitor to a customer right there. If the CMS is collecting email addresses, make sure there is an opt-opt option for the customer. The best systems will work off your list of items and categories to reflect the latest information.
Images
How you manage images is very important in a CMS, A good image manager will create smaller images that can viewed quickly while not taking much time to load as larger images do. On upload, a good image manager will actually resize the image to a size specified and adjust the resolution to optimize it for display in a browser. You should be ables to organize your images, preview them and refer to them in multiple URL's
Custom Pages
Besides standard pages used in the industry, make sure you can create fully functional custom pages that support standard HTML and JavaScript, preferably with a text editor built in. The custom pages should be accessible from the sites main menu.

OrderTransmission

Price
eMail

When a customer places an order, the order is sent to the email address associated with the website. A copy of the order is sent to the customers email address.

Use this option if time is not of the essence. As there are no fees, this the most cost effective method of receiving orders placed on your website, but remember email messages are subject to delays and and security filters. This is not recommended for restaurants or any business that must process the order immediately .

A phone notification feature is available for this option where PBSMenu will call the phone number associated with the store indicating an order was placed and an email was sent and will include the customers name and phone number(phone transaction fees apply).

A text notification message can also be setup to a cell phone

CPU_CPU (browser) $0.25

From any computer with access to the internet, an authorized administrator for the store signs into a secure socket access area of the website. When a customer places an order, a notification will sound indicating an order has been placed and the information is available. The order is then reviewed by the administrator and may be printed. An email reply message is generated to the customer that placed the order, formatted with the text that the order was received and will be processed as requested. The text can be edited to change any information and to add any exceptions before being sent to the customer.Once the order has been processed, it is marked closed by stores administrator and the information is no longer available on the open orders screen.(although a copy of the order was emailed to the stores email address as well)

With this option the notification will continue to sound until the order is reviewed. If an order is not acknowledged within 8 minutes after a customer has placed an order, PBSMenu will call the phone number associated with the website to notify the store, indicating the problem and will include the customers phone number.

This is the best option for a restaurant or any business that requires the order information immediately and has an Internet connection available. A separate browser window could be opened on any available computer at the location that will listen for the orders and sound a notification. If a computer isn't available a small net-book could be purchased for under $300 that is configured with everything required.

Fax $0.50

With this option, a transaction of the order and is sent via a secured transaction to our fax server where it is formatted to a standard fax message and sent over phone lines to the fax number associated with the stores website. The message is monitored by PBSMenu. If the line is busy or unavailable, a re-try attempt will be made every 2 minutes up to 4 times. If the Fax fails PBSMenu will phone the number associated with the stores website indicating the problem and include the customers name and phone number.

As soon as the order is placed, an acknowledgement that the order was transmitted to the restaurant is emailed to the customer and includes a link to information regarding the status of the fax.

This is the best option to use if there is no computer or internet access available at the location.

A phone notification feature is available for this option where PBSMenu will call the phone number associated with the store indicating an order was placed and a fax was initiated. This notification will include the customers name and phone number(additional phone transaction fees apply).

A text notification message can also be setup to a cell phone

Phone (voice) $0.50

With this option, a copy of the order is sent via a secured transaction to our voice server where it is formatted to a standard voice phone message and sent over phone lines to the phone number associated with the stores website. If the line is busy or unavailable, a re-try attempt will be made every 3 minutes up to 5 times. The phone systems voice-mail should be disabled while using this option.

A copy of the order is also sent to the email address associated with with the website.

Use this option when neither a fax machine or  internet access is available at the locatation.

Menu Item Modifiers

Sizes
up to six sizes can be specified for each category(or subcategory). The maintainer of menu specifies on the category how many prices, what each price is titled and what the default size is. When the customer clicks on the item the default size is used and can be changed on the item details screen. When the customer clicks on the price of a different size, that size is used. Sizes are carried through to extras and preferences as well.
Preferences

Preferences are modifiers used when the item requires a selection of available options, and are made up of a preference name and preference descriptions(for example Bread would be the preference name, white wheat, and rye would be the preference descriptions). The number of allowable selections can be specified if the preference allows more than one. Prices for each size of the item could be added, and modified for each selection description.

A half & half option is available for each preference, this will generate a radio button indicating the selection is available for the first half and second half or the whole item, an adjustment amount will be applied to the price if applicable.

a multiplier can be applied to a selection description where the price will be multiplied by this amount and the count of selected descriptions will increase by this number.

Preferences can be added at the menu item level or menu category level. If a Preferences is added to the category it will appear and be available on every item in that category.

Extras

Extras are modifiers that can be added to any menu item or item category. If an extra is added to the category it will appear and be available on every item in that category. Use extras for add-on sales to your item and as conman preparation instructions.Prices cad be added to extras and vary by size, quantities can be added as well.

Special instructions

Special instructions can be added to any item on the menu list and will appear in the order being sent next to the item being ordered.

Recipient

The name of the recipient can be added to any item on the menu list and will appear in the order being sent next to the item being ordered. This is ideal for companies that combine food orders at lunch time or for families ordering take individual take out meals

OnLine Ordering

Give your customer the option to buy your product immediately if possible

Statistics show the average order is increased from 12 to 28% and profits by as much as 35% or more.

Visitors may come looking for information or to browse your menu, but once they realize they can order right there, just the way they want it- With only a few more clicks of the mouse, you have a sale

Here are some of the many other benefits of providing online ordering.

  • Frees up staff from the phone to attend to your in-house patrons.
  • Eliminate busy signals or long hold times often incurred with call in orders resulting in customer dissatisfaction and sometimes lost sales.
  • Your menu is viewed in detail while customers leisurely take their time to make their selections and choose from a variety of menu options and additional accompaniments.
  • Order accuracy is increased.
  • You gather marketing data that enables you  to send targeted advertising messages to online customers -- creating greater customer loyalty and repeat business.

There are many companies that offer online ordering services and will set up your menu on their website for free and will only charge the restaurant if they send you an order. They charge a commission for their services. Although the fees are generally pretty high, usually ranging from $1 to $8, it may be justified as they drive additional business to your store that you would not have otherwise. I do not recommend however providing a link to their ordering engine on your website  and paying that commission for a sale you already have,. Also once your customer signs up to an online ordering website, they can use their account on all the other sites using the service, that’s usually your competition

The most important element in a successful online ordering system is the online ordering engine. Just as having the convenience of a reliable ordering system in place enhances customer satisfaction, having a system in place that isn't reliable will do much damage to your customer perception. The only thing worse than a customer browsing your menu, placing an order, and not be able to complete it, is having completed it and arriving at the store only to find the store has not received it. The most important aspects of an online ordering system are reliability, followed by ease of use, and updatability. The system should be flexible enough to accommodate your business requirements as well,  such as delivery charges, sales tax , gratuities, charge cards, coupons etc..

Fees for orders vary, some ordering engines charge commission on each order as well. Our online ordering engine PBSMenu (PBSMenu.com) is integrated into the software, letting the customer order directly from your menu. Fees are based on the type of transaction and range from $0.00 for email, $.25 for CPU-CPU and $.50 per phone/fax transaction.

Listed below are some of the features of the PBSMenu ordering engine

PBSMenu
Reliable Stable Available

Unlike shopping cart solutions and disparate online ordering providers, PBSMenu is integrated into an attractive menu, when a visitor clicks the menu item they are provided with more information about it, as well as available options to prepare it and an option to add it to their order. The customer will only be asked for a name, an email address and a phone number when they complete and place the order. An account need not be setup unless the customer is paying by credit card
